owl in box

While driving to work last week we found a large, great horned owl on the side of the freeway next to a tall concrete wall. He could fly, but not very well (he looked like he may have gotten clipped by a car).
We caught him in mid-flight before it got out in traffic and I somehow managed to not get bitten or ripped open by his claws.
We were on the way to work so we had to bring him with us.
He was pretty mad so it was really tricky to photograph him. I had to hold him with one hand in my lap and work the camera with the other hand.
One of the homeowners we met with that day gave us a box, so that made things quite a bit easier.
We dropped him off at a state park and an animal rescue organization sent a team to come pick him up (I'm not sure if they knew he was already in a box).

Update: While in a totally different city working the other day, Frank got into a conversation with a homeowner who pointed out the spot where a hawk crashed into his window, so Frank mentioned the owl we dropped off at the park.
Strangely, it turned out this homeowner was a volunteer who just happened to be working at the park the day we brought the owl.
Without realizing it, we had even seen him from a distance working on a park project at a back section of the park after hiking 6 miles through the canyons the day we dropped off the owl.
Anyway, circumstantial craziness aside, he informed us the owl was doing good and was almost ready for release.

I also found this randomly. The next to last pic and the one of just one eye with the steering wheel are my favorites.

Your so awsome whoever you are. I was laughing and laughing. I agree, a little owl kicking ass would have been great.

Notice the difference in the size of his pupils. That's a sign of head trauma and probably the reason you got close to him. In the same way that if you have ever been around someone who is concussed and noticed how docile they. Hopefully he recovers well.

I thought that too (about head trauma) but then I noticed that his right eye is under the shadow of the box lid in the picture where the difference is most prominent, whereas the left is not. In the first picture (for example) they look pretty even. I think that probably has more to do with it than trauma. That said, I'm glad he has been treated and is recovering.

That owl is so going to fuck your shit up. ;D He's got this look like, "Come over here, human. You don't need your arms anyway."

I've rescued baby barn owls before, but a full-grown Great Horned is a little intimidating. Glad you guys wrangled him and he's going to be okay to release.

He tried, but luckily I had a lot of experience with angry animals. I also have pet genets, which are the fastest things I have ever seen- and they hate people (so I get a lot of practice trying to not get bitten).

Last week,on my way to work, I came upon a Barred Owl sitting in the road. He let me get close but he didn't want to be urged off to the
side of the road. Call my husband to come protect him from cars
until the rescue people came. They released him 2 days later, but
didn't tell us what the problem was.

Caught this on boing boing. You're such a good Samaritan! Not only that, but you have some epic owl handling skills. It most likely did have head trauma if it let you handle it but you're still really lucky you didn't get seriously hurt.

The owl looks so pissed off in the photos but I'm sure it's happy to be all better. Huzzah for your good deed.
